Housing in Southern Virginia

The Southern Virginia region has been intentional in addressing its housing needs through multiple housing studies and annual housing summits. The City of Danville has developed an incentive program to deploy real estate tax abatements and reimbursement grants to stimulate future residential development. Because of the region’s proactive approach in evaluating the housing marketing and marketing development opportunities, Danville and Pittsylvania County will have over 5,300 multi-family and over 4,300 single-family housing units added to its inventory between now and 2029. These projects are currently in the planning, permitting, or construction phase. Future housing developments in the region include:

  • Dan River Falls: This mixed-use and mixed-income development in the City of Danville will include 150 housing units.
  • Axton Development: This $400M development in Pittsylvania County will include 2,000 housing units.
  • Aaron Mills: Located in Martinsville, this furniture plant conversion will create 52 new apartment units.
  • Blairs: This former middle school site will become 51 housing units in Pittsylvania County.
  • Monument Berryman: This new housing development will include 24 single-family townhomes and 60 apartments in the City of Danville.
  • Fitzgerald/Coin Ops Building: Remodel of four-story brick structure into 22 luxury apartments.
  • Imperial Warehouse: 103 apartments in a former warehouse in Danville’s River District.
  • One Ellsworth: Conversion of former bank building in downtown Martinsville into 69 apartments.
